Opinion·Week 7

Morgan beat a 5–2 that scored 54.

The bench had the louder names. The record moved anyway.

Pays more attention to Morgan’s claims than anyone should.

Holden came in at 5–1 and left at 5–2. The score was 54 to 77, and 54 is not a number you file next to the other contenders without saying it. Goff had 18. Bijan had 12. Bernard had 3 and Allgeier had 5. On the bench, Skattebo had 18 and Malik Willis had 26. I am not going to rebuild the lineup from the couch and pretend the week flips clean. The starters were quiet, the unused names were not, and the loss is still a loss.

Morgan scored 77, which is not a statement, and he won. Corum had 16. Purdy had 12. He is 4–3, second in the West behind Thomas, and he did it on a Sunday when the other side did a lot of the losing. That is allowed. Week 8 is Lucas, who is 0–7. A 4–3 does not get to treat that as a break, and he also does not need to apologize for 77 if it was enough.

The East is the cleaner picture, and it got less clean. Fuss and Nathan are both 6–1. Holden is the 5–2 who just showed a floor. If the wild card is about who can score when the week is ordinary, this was the week that asked and did not get a comforting answer. He plays Thomas next. Thomas just lost to the roster that sold its stars, and he still cannot trade. One of them is going to leave that game at 5–3.
