The rebuild is not one phone call. It is four of them, from Tuesday morning through Friday afternoon, and they all go the same direction. Lucas is 0–7. He spent the week taking the players who still looked like a contender’s pieces off the roster and putting picks where they were. That is later than you want to start, and it is still the first time the roster matches the record.

Tuesday he sent Nico Collins to Fuss. What came back was DeVonta Smith, Jordan Addison, Fuss’s 2029 second, and Devyn’s 2029 second. Nico has 52 points, and a lot of those weeks were quiet. Smith and Addison are not the same receiver. They are also not nothing, and the seconds are the part that fits a team with seven losses. Fuss is 6–1, so his second is the one that figures to sit at the back. Devyn is 1–6, so his is the one with a little more air in it.

Wednesday night he sent Jordan Love to Greer for Greer’s 2027 second and Greer’s 2029 second. Love has been a weekly quarterback. The first seven weeks were 20, 14, 19, 13, 25, 20, and 17, which is a starter in a league that only plays one. Lucas still has Murray. He did not sell the position. He sold the extra one, and he sold him for seconds instead of talking himself into a playoff push that the standings had already ended.

Friday was two calls, not one. Jeanty went to Morgan for two 2027 firsts, with Lucas’s 2028 second going along. Half an hour later McConkey went to Greer for Greer’s 2029 first, and the 2029 second from the Love deal went back with him. McConkey has 26 points. That is not a season, and Lucas did not have a standings reason to wait for one. He did not include his own 2027 first in any of it. That is the pick that should be early if the losing holds, and keeping it is the difference between a rebuild and a clearance. Nico is gone. Love is gone. The back is gone. The receiver is gone. What he added is other people’s future, and what he refused to add was his own.
