Morgan spent two firsts while he is still in it.

Jeanty is the back. The cost is a 2027 first of his own, and Greer’s.

Pays more attention to Morgan’s claims than anyone should.

Morgan did not need a rescue. He is 4–3 and second in the West, a game behind Thomas, and he just beat Holden with 77. What he did not have was a back you could point at and stop talking. Corum has been the useful one. Hampton is on the roster. Jeanty is the one he paid for, and he paid for him on Friday, the same week he plays the team that just handed him over.

The price is his own 2027 first and the 2027 first that used to be Greer’s. He also picked up Lucas’s 2028 second. That is a contender’s purchase if the back is in the lineup in December, and it is an expensive week if Jeanty stays in the 8-to-14 range he has lived in since the opener. Eighty-eight points is a real total. It is not a total that makes two firsts feel free. Morgan can live with the second half of that sentence because he is trying to win a spot, not a draft.

The firsts get later if this works. That is the point of spending them in October instead of February. Greer’s pick is the one that can still wander, because Greer is 3–4 with a roster that just led the league. Morgan’s own pick is the one he is trying to ruin on purpose. Thomas is still frozen, so this was never going to be a call across the West to the team in front of him. Lucas was the owner who would sell. Morgan was the owner who could still use it.
