Opinion·The rest of the year

The good players ended up on teams that were already winning.

Nathan and Mitchell were the buyers. Thomas watched it with the freeze still shut.

Wednesday was one decision, told in two trades. Hefner is 1–5, and he stopped building a lineup for this year. The players who have been healthy and useful, Taylor and Amon-Ra, went to Nathan. Henry, the back who has actually held a weekly job, went to John Mitchell, with Barkley, Lamar, and Deebo riding along and each of them carrying a question. What Hefner kept that still runs a week is Maye. What he can use from the return is Flowers, Pickens, and a stack of picks that used to belong to somebody else. His own 2027 first is still with Thomas. The freeze means he was never getting that one back, so the firsts he picked up tonight are the future he can actually touch.

Nathan is the change that does not need a doctor’s note. He was already second, and he was already built like a team that did not need a favor. Gibbs, Kyren, CeeDee, London, Evans, Mahomes, Kittle. Taylor and Amon-Ra on top of that is not a patch on a hole. It is a second offense. He gave up Devyn’s 2027 first, which can still be early if Devyn stays 1–5, and his own 2028 first, which probably will not be. For this year, that is a trade a 5–1 makes every time the other owner is done. He plays Mitchell in week 7. The two buyers find out immediately whether any of this helps, and the week has not started, so there is no result to borrow from Sunday.

Mitchell’s half only works if Henry is the story and the other names are extra. He is 3–3, and he has wanted a back who has a job. He has one. He also has a Barkley who has not had a season you can show anyone, a Lamar who has been out of the last two weeks, and a Deebo who is listed out. He paid three firsts and Flowers for the chance to see which of those sentences changes. If he plays his way into the six, those picks fall in the back half of the round, because the lottery is only the bottom four and the champion picks last. That is a fine regret for a team that gets in. It is a bad one for a team that paid and still watches. Opening the experiment against Nathan is a mean week to start.

Fuss is who this is aimed at, even if his name was not on either offer. He has had the high score five weeks in a row, and nobody in the league has scored more. Nothing of his moved. Nathan’s roster is the first one in a while that looks able to live next to that without needing a strange Sunday. It has not done it. A trade is not a week, and this desk is not moving the chair because another owner went shopping. Holden is the other 5–1, and he did not have to answer the sale to stay in the group. Thomas is the 5–1 who had to sit through it. The block was shut. He could not call about Taylor, and he could not call about Henry, and he already had the lightest points of the four. Everyone else can still deal until the Thursday after week 10. He cannot.

The disappointing part, if you were hoping the middle would open up, is that a 1–5’s good players did not scatter. They usually do. Somebody at 3–3 gets one, somebody at 2–4 gets another, and the race gets a little wider. Tonight the clean ones went to the team that was already second. The expensive one went to the other wild-card team, at a price that hurts later and might help now. Greer still has the names and the record that does not match them. Morgan still has the West’s second seat and a harder neighbor. Devyn is 1–5, and the first with his name on it was just spent to make Nathan heavier. Lucas is 0–6 and was not in the conversation. The rest of the year is a smaller room. Fuss has the proof. Nathan has the new depth. Mitchell has one sure back and a bet. Hefner has a quarterback and 2027. Everybody else is climbing a hill that got steeper while they were at dinner.
