Opinion·Rest of the year

A stock for everybody, now that the sale is over.

Nathan and Mitchell bought their way up. Hefner sold the year. The freeze kept Thomas out of the room.

Pays more attention to Morgan’s claims than anyone should.

This is about the rest of this season, not about who won the next three drafts. A team can get better in 2027 and worse between now and the title. Hefner is that team. The two buyers are the other kind. Nobody gets a stay. The night moved the league, and standing still is a direction too.

Nathan, stock up

He was already 5–1 and already second. He added Taylor and Amon-Ra to Gibbs, Kyren, and a receiver room that did not need the help. The cost is a first that might be early and a first of his own that should not be. Neither of those is due this winter. From here to the last week of the regular season, this is the most improved roster in the league, and it was not a broken one when the day started. He plays Mitchell this week, which is a quick test and not a reason to fade him.

John Mitchell, stock up

A 3–3 that needed a back now has Henry, and Henry has been the sure thing in the package. That is enough to mark him up for the rest of this year, even though the bill is three firsts and Flowers. Barkley has not had a season, Lamar has missed the last two weeks, and Deebo is out. If those three stay questions, the stock comes back down on its own. Until then he is more dangerous in November than he was at lunch, and the wild-card race is the rest of his year.

Fuss, stock up

Nothing of his moved, and that is the point rather than a problem. He has had the high score five weeks in a row, and he has more points than anyone. Nathan is a more serious rival than he was this morning. That is Nathan’s stock. You do not mark the team down for still being the one the rest of the room is arranging itself against. He did not need the sale. The sale did not take anyone off his roster. Week 7 is Devyn.

Greer, stock up

This is a narrow up, and it is about the path rather than the trophy. He is 2–4 with the kind of names that can still win a month, and the rest of his year is about getting into the six, not about passing Fuss in October. The 5–1s were already out of reach. What changed is the team that might have stolen weeks from the middle. Hefner sold the players that made him dangerous. The room Greer has to climb through is less crowded than it was, and he still has to do the climbing. Week 7 is Lucas, which is at least the right opponent for a team that needs a win and not a statement.

Hefner, stock down

He chose this, and it is still a down if the question is 2026. Taylor, Amon-Ra, and Henry are gone. The players who came back that he can use are Flowers and Pickens, plus Jacobs, who has not scored, and Hunter, who is not a starter. Maye is the piece he was right to keep. The picks are a real future, and a future is not a lineup in week 7, when he plays the frozen champion. A 1–5 that sells its answers is supposed to get marked down for the year it just left.

Thomas, stock down

He is 5–1, and he had the lightest points of that group before anybody made a call. Then the league put real players on the market and he was not allowed to buy them. The block does not care that Taylor and Henry were the kind of week his roster has been short. They are on other teams now. Everyone else can keep dealing until the Thursday after week 10. His window does not open because the rest of the room had a busy night. Week 7 is Hefner, who just became an easier game and a worse sign.

Holden, stock down

The record is still 5–1, and nobody raided his roster, so this is not a collapse. It is a worse seat than he had at lunch. Nathan, the team he would have to go through, got heavier. Mitchell, the team beside him in the wild-card talk, bought the back Holden did not buy. Standing still while both of those rosters improve is a down even when your own card looks the same. He plays Morgan. That part did not get harder. The part after it did.

Morgan, stock down

He is 3–3 and he still has the West’s second seat, which is why this is not a eulogy. Mitchell is the problem. Same record, same division conversation, and Mitchell just added the back Morgan did not add. Nathan, whom Morgan just lost to, got better on the same night. Morgan’s own roster is the one he had yesterday. The neighbors are not. Week 7 is Holden, a 5–1, which was already a hard week before the rest of the league went shopping.

Devyn, stock down

His roster did not lose a player. The league around him got heavier, and the first-round pick with his name on it, which Nathan had been holding, was spent tonight to put Taylor next to Gibbs. He is 1–5. He plays Fuss this week. A down here is not a verdict on one close loss. It is what happens when you needed the hill to get smaller and the hill grew.

Lucas, stock down

He is 0–6, and the night did not send him anyone. The teams he would need to stumble are the teams that just got better or were already ahead. Greer is the week, and Greer is one of the few clubs whose path improved. There is no version of this sale that was going to fix six losses. There was a version where the middle got messy enough to leave a door. It did not.
